It has been a very exciting month at Tigertree! We spent a week in Vegas, searching for great apparel and accessories for next spring, then a week in New York at the International Gift Fair hand picking the perfect gifts for you to give for every occasion.. then we came back to Columbus and relocated our store into the beautiful 2,600 square foot wonder that we now call home! We didn't go far- you can find us just two doors north of our old location at 787 N High St.
The Ely Brother popped in on Tuesday and took some beautiful photos (below). The Alive also came by that morning to finish up an article about the opening that came out on Thrusday- you can read it here!

New animal pillows from Areaware are in!

So when I walked in the store yesterday to find that the shipment of animal pillows from Areaware had arrived, I actually grabbed a few and started jumping up and down with them. They are AMAZING! The photos are cute, but really don't do them justice. Each pillow is made by hand in Brooklyn. Images are hand screened with water based ink on 100% Organic Cotton Broadcloth and stuffed with polly fill. There are three basic sizes that range from smallish-cute-plaything to huge-statment-making jumbo pillows. Prices range from $28-$124. You can check out the whole collection on our website here, but if you live in the neighborhood, you should really swing by and check them out in person!

Tigertree is Expanding!!

We are so excited to announce that Tigertree is growing! In September, we will open our new storefront at 787 High Street, two doors up from our current location. This new space, which is three times the size of our current shop, will give us the opportunity to significantly expand our offerings! Some notable additions to the usual Tigertree lineup will include one-of-a-kind industrial and school salvage furniture pieces, expanded home and kitchen items, and a well-curated mix of vintage goods. Of course, we will also have more room to offer a wider selection of what you have come to love and expect from us including mens and womens apparel and accessories, jewelry, books and unique gift items.

We will remain open at our current location through August and expect to only be closed for a couple of days at the end of the month to move everything out of the old space and into the new. That does sound like an impressive timeline, doesn't it? Don't worry, we are fast and strong and will call in many favors to get it done. (You can expect our call soon.)

This would be a nice point to say thanks to everyone that has supported us for the past four and half years. You are the ones who make growth like this possible and we are thrilled to be signing away the next five years of our lives to serve you! We just recieved a shipment of Orla Kiely bags in the brand new Oval Stem print! As unlikely as it may seem, I feel like we are always the first store to get the new patterns.. I cannot find anyone else who has this in stock already! If you are wondering why I was checking around, it was to see if I could just use someone else's photos, because mine are no good. I took them in my back yard. But anyway, I suppose they will do and if you are lucky enough to live in lovely Columbus, come check them out in person!

This body of bag is new for this season and it is my favorite in the collection! A detachable, adjustable strap makes it possible to wear this as a shoulder or across the body bag as well as a good old handbag. Two slit pockets on the front and back of the bag give you easy access to things that you need to be able to quickly fish out of your bag while a zip top closure and inner zip pocket keeps all of your items secure!

Josh's favorite pair of shorts are made by the line, Paste. They are simple enough, but are just the perfect length and fit. When we heard that Paste was making swimming trunks with the same cut for this summer we did not bat an eye at the fact that we have never carried swimwear before. These HAD to be at Tigertree! And now they are:

These snap cuff shorts are great because they look good worn at the longer length, but then have the ability to snap up for days that you are feeling more adventurous. They feature a zip and tie closure and are made from quick-drying microfiber.

The City Shorts are a shorter length (the same as the cuffed shorts when they are cuffed) and feature a great original, all-over print.

And as long as we were diving in (ha ha) to the world of swimwear, why not add some Ben Sherman? Everyone knows that we are suckers for brightly colored bottoms, so we could not resist these great Mint Swim trunks! These have more of a traditional cut with mesh lining and zipper/button closure.

Dear Creatures Spring

There is really no getting around it- Dear Creatures is the cutest line out there. If you ever met Bianca, the mastermind behind the brand, you would understand that she is not capable of creating things that are not absolutely adorable.

Last time I saw her, she excitedly told me about how she recently got engaged at a Kitty Cafe in Tokyo. A Kitty Cafe! My point in sharing this is to say that the preciousness that you see in this line is genuine. Bianca is just that damn cute and her designs just ooze that personality.

The Spring collection is, I think, one of her best ever. The feather print (on the Par Avion and Heather dresses) is one of my favorites ever. The colors are amazing, pair them with the great silhouettes of these dresses and its magic!

Josh and I went to the Summit last night to see some of our friends play. We were flattered to see everyone was dressed in their Tigertree favorites. We ran into Brian Flaiz who always seems to show up wearing the same thing as someone else in the room. This is so crazy because it is always something from Tigertree and we only get in 6 pieces of every style! This shirt he was wearing last night is from Ben Sherman.. we are the only shop in Columbus to carry that brand. So there is a 6 in 3 million chance that someone else in the city will have even own the same piece, let alone wear it at the same time! AND pair it with the same jacket, jeans and facial hair?? Anyway, this was the scene:

Vintage Ties!

A selection of vintage ties are now available on the website and at the store! I have been collecting these for forever.. I think old ties are amazing. The details on some of these are great. That green one in the second row has three button holes in the back so that you can attach it to your shirt! The cream colored tie in the second row has a tiny YSL symbol embroidered on the bottom and beautiful ysl lining. The patterned one in the third row has instructions on the label that it is to be worn with a blue or grey suit. The tie in the top left corner was made in Ireland from pure wool.

Obviously we only have one of each of these, so if one catches your eye, make sure to swing by the store or check them out on the website fast!

Learn the Ropes in the Exciting, Fast-Paced World of Fashion (or, Do Our Bitch Work Please)

For four years, Josh and I ran Tigertree pretty much by ourselves. Like all angles- buying, selling, cleaning, book keeping, merchandising, advertising, event planning, etc. We are thrilled that after so much effort, time and love, the shop is growing into something that is bigger than our little hands can handle. A few months ago, Brittany Willis joined our team, taking over the shop on Wednesdays and Thursdays. She is awesome and so much nicer than we are- if you have not been in on those days for a while, I certainly encourage it.

But even with the support of a great third member, we are all feeling a little overwhelmed with the day to day tasks of the store. In short, and I can not help but be honest here, we need someone to do our bitch work. Steaming/pricing new shipments, making buttons for the chicken machine, packaging web orders, doing runs to Impero.. plus, of course, utilizing any skills that this person may have to offer to the shop (photography, graphic design, merchandising, etc).

This position can only be repaid by a store discount and the occasional free coffee (which that person will be picking up...). We can offer credit for anyone who needs an internship.

Basically, this is really only an attractive opportunity for someone who is interested in learning about what we do and how we do it. Ideally, we would like the person to work one day a week with Brittany (Wednesday or Thursday) and one day with us (the other days), but this is super flexible. One day a week would be fine.

We have had so many people ask us for internships in the past and we have had to turn them down because we just didn't have anything for them to do. We now have things to do. Lots of them. Shoot me an email at niki@shoptigertee.com if you are interested!

New Shinzi Katoh kitchen, gift and stationery item are in!

Shinzi Katoh is one of those lines that we have carried since we opened the shop 4 years ago and I can't image that we will ever stop offering it. What do they make? Everything. How do they make it? Cute.

I cannot say enough about how great these insulated bottles are. We used to carry Stanley bottles which are supposed to be the best ever made, right? I was never impressed with those. These things are amazing!

We got our biggest shipment ever on Friday and many of you will be happy to hear that it was boxes upon boxes full of Toms!

Reduction Sale

I know this is a couple of days late, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone that came downtown on Saturday morning, waited in line in the cold and then got smooshed and trampled once inside the sale to get all of the great deals that were offered at Saturday's Reduction!

This was the best attended reduction event that we have had yet! We will admit that, though we thought the energy of crowd and the line were pretty great, we could have used quite a bit more space. We promise that the next event will be a little more mellow and spacious. Fingers crossed that Wonderland's event space will be available at that time.

New books from McSweeney's!

We are thrilled to be carrying books from McSweeney's! If you are not familiar, McSweeney's is a small publishing house that started out as a literary journal, edited by Dave Eggers, that published only works rejected by other magazines. Today, the publication has grown to be one of the country’s best-read and widely-circulated literary journals. McSweeney’s Books has published over thirty-five titles, and we are happy to have a handfull of them in the shop.

Josh and I both just finished reading Zeitoun. I was worried that it was just going to be another book about Katrina, but it blew my mind. Dave Eggers is one of my favorite writers, so I love the general tone of the book and the store of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian-American entrepreneur who stayed in New Orleans to protect his house and business through the hurricane is almost unbelievable. It made me feel guilty for not being outraged enough about what was happening in our country at that time.

On a lighter note!

We are strong believers in everyone pulling their own weight in a household, so we are big fans of The Baby Be of Use series. These books teach your young ones helpful skills like how to make you breakfast, do your banking, fix your car, and mix a great drink. Goodness knows they have the time.

We also got in this gem.

A collection of the names of over fifty thousand metal bands. It's kind of amazing.

We would love to start carrying the Quarterly as well, we just don't know if there is a demand for it. So, if you would like to see the journal being stocked at Tigertree, please just let us know.

Textile Love: Ace & Jig Spring/Summer

The new Ace & Jig spring/summer pieces came in yesterday! This line is all about the fabric.
Each season, they work hand in hand with textile specialists in India to create 3-4 yarn-dye woven fabrics and then make a handful of simple silhouettes from them. No denim, no shoes, no tee shirts. Just a few effortless piece that allow the fabric to speak for itself.

Each piece is made by hand in India on an ancient hand loom. The designers are often on site where they can work with the weavers one on one. Equally important, they share the same morals and values while practicing the holistic kaizen philosophy of continuing to improve. Not only do they provide free childcare, but they also use reclaimed water to grow organic produce for their employees.
The end result are accessible clothes that are not overstyled, pieces that you keep forever and love. Each silhouette hopes to be quintessential pieces that live and travel with you.

I am so ready for spring. I have already started refusing to wear my heavy sweaters and boots. I can layer and have chilly ankles, but I am not looking back!

To celebrate the official start to spring, we are growing 100 plants in the front windows.

There is a mix of herbs and flowers and, thankfully, they are starting to emerge and make the storefront look a little less silly.

We have been getting new shipments of summery goodness in ever day. A few highlights:

The Hannah dress in Feather Print is one of my favorite things that we have ever had in the store! It is fully lined and has a petticoat for extra volume at the bottom. Oh and also, nice deep slit pockets! I think this dress is perfect for weddings, fourth of july gatherings, or just generally looking adorable.

The Lebedev Dress dress has an amazing back cutout detail and contrast snaps. Also, pockets. Everything that POPOMOMO makes is made in the US and 100% organic.

The spring/summer collection from Many Belles Down is so cute and inexpensive! The Achy Breaky Dress is one of my favorite pieces and retails for $52! It has pockets too.. I'm so glad that designers are finally realizing that we want pockets on EVERY dress!

Ben Sherman is doing so many fun piece for spring! I love this shirt- guess what it has? Pockets! It also features cute contrast cuffs. Another favorite is this reversible woven which can be worn on the blue side or switched out for red.

Tigertree Exclusives!

People ask us all the time how we decide what to carry in the shop. Simple; we carry what we like. When we see that there is a need for certain products that we just cannot find on the market like fun jewelry that is affordable, comfy t shirts that aren't over-designed, simple leather belts in good colors at decent prices, etc, we make it! And if we are not skilled enough to make it with our own hands, we find other local people who can! As such, we have amassed quite a few Tigertree exclusives over the years. Some of our current favorites:

Okay, so obviously we are the only people that carry our logo tee, but I bet other shops would if we would let them! Our logo was designed by the most talented graphic designer alive, Jon Klassen, and it is hand screened on ridiculously soft tri-blend tees right here in Columbus!

This Columbus graphic was taken from an early 1900's book. The book taught 10 year old boys how to be bigger bad asses than any grown man in this generation could dream of. Thus, the paddles and guns. Again, locally screened on The Most Comfortable Shirt in the World.

Our most well-known commissioned work would probably be our Ohio necklaces which are made by local artist, Anne Holman. She cuts each recycled sterling silver pendant out by hand with a jewelers saw! Each one! Every curve! By hand! We have seen a lot of people out there copying this necklace, but I don't think you can improve on the beautiful and simple design that Anne made.

I've never been a jewels kind of girl and, to be honest, I just don't like spending much money on jewelry. I wanted to be able to give our customers unique and fun pieces that were super affordable, and the best way that I found to do that was to just make them! I mix a lot of vintage and new elements to create statement pieces that never cost more than $36.

Our line of belt buckles made from the covers of discarded library books is what eventually led us to ope Tigertree. To be fair, these are not exactly a Tigertree exlusive. Over the years, we have been honored to have them sold by some of the best retailers in the world; Fred Segal was our first account and Bergdorf Godman and Henri Bendel followed soon after. No I will not pick up those names I just dropped.

Once we opened the shop and were actually meeting the customers who were buying our buckles, we realized that may of them were in need of a good belt to wear them with. Again, after a pretty extensive search to find a quality handmade product at a good price, we gave up and decided to learn how to make them ourselves. The belts pictured above have quote hand punched into them in tribute to our favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut, they are also available plain.

Americana at its best! Pendleton, The Portland Collection

Josh and I spent last week in the desert picking out your Christmas presents. Its a weird life, this shopkeep thing.

We were attending Magic, the world's largest fashion tradeshow checking out fall/winter collections. We were thrilled to find that many of the brands that we have had in the store have many good things on the way. More exciting, though, is finding new lines to cozy up and call Tigertree home. Our favorite new line from this show is Pendleton, The Portland Collection.

I should say that we really love Pendleton's mainline- its a family owned 140+ year old brand steeped in Americana. We have a couple of great thrift store finds from the brand in our coat closet. Think of the Portland Collection as Pendleton's super cool daughter who got ahold of all of the amazing vintage pieces in the attic and slimmed down all the fits to make them current.

Pendleton commissioned three local designers from their hometown of Portland to create the line. It takes their iconic textiles and marries them with independent design. The vision for this collection is to take the best of what Pendleton has been, an iconic brand for decades, and interpret it for a young, vibrant and global audience.

We are thrilled to be a part of the launch of this line! The first shipment will be available at Tigertree in September!

I was so poor in college. I think I literally only bought textbooks and Hot Pockets. There was one purchase that I remember really saving up for and splurging on, though, and that was a Crosley Turntable. It was the pride of my tiny apartment then and has moved with me several times over the years.

Here it is in my crappy apartment downtown (I don't know why there is a tv in the middle of the room or why I am ironing on a table).

I was delighted when I unpacked the new Hand hooks and discovered that they were even creepier than I had imaged. Each one is cast from the designer, Harry Allen's, unusually large hands. The Grab hand is a catchall that would be perfect for keys, jewelry, or any small items that. The Bestow hand has two interchangeable pieces to suit your needs: one is a glass vase, the other a ceramic and metal candlestick holder.

Our first shipment from Richmond-based, Maslo Design arrived this week. Each piece is a handmade mix of vintage pieces and new findings.

Josh and I are looking to expand our family. Nope, not that way- we love using our third bedroom as a walk in closet too much to give it up to a nursery. We are finally at the point with Tigertree where we need full time help.
We are looking for a very special person. Someone with retail experience, but not someone who is constantly on. We need someone who is organized enough to run the operations of a bustling shop but flexible enough to change everything when customers and the market demands. This is an awesome opportunity to be involved with every aspect of owning a boutique- from buying and sourcing to window displays and visuals to accounting and marketing.. to dusting and washing the windows (yes, we DO do that ourselves..). Flip Flaps!

People ask us all the time how we decide what to carry in the store. In the case of Flip Flaps, the love affair started one very late night in the New York, New York arcade in Vegas. Josh was trying to win a new phone or wii game when I noticed a tiny frog in the prize line up, soothingly bobbing his head back and forth. I made Josh focus his efforts on winning this amazing find, but with no luck. After spending way too much money, he decided that there might be a better way to go about getting a Flip Flap (as we later learned they were called.)
After a few months of searching and a lot of confusing emails, we were able to bring these treasures to Tigertree! They are available for $12 which is a steal compared to the money we spent trying to win one!
So what are they? Please don't call them bobble heads! They are solar powered animated friends. They greet us us every morning when we walk in to the shop and quietly put themselves to sleep when they sun goes down. Josh and I love eating. We especially love eating street food. We have hosted Foodie Cart in front of the shop every Saturday afternoon for the past couple of months with the guise of helping another local business, but really we just wanted crepes at our disposal all afternoon. Kenny and Misako were even kind enough to create a crepe just for Tigertree Saturdays- The Tigertree BLT (and E&C) (that's egg and cheese for those of you less versed in sandwich shorthand).

They will be back in front of the store this Saturday afternoon. You can track them @freshstreet on Twitter or at facebook/com/foodie.cart.

Every fall, the San Fransisco based line, She-Bible manages to make my new favorite piece of clothing. We just got in the jacket that you will likely see me in every day until I have to break out the down-filled parkas for the February freeze.

We have a smallish storefront. My parents can never find it when they visit. "Mom, there is a chicken machine out front!" I say. But they still drive right by.
Well, I think we have put a stop to that.

It took four coats to get the yellow solid enough. Even as I was painting, we were getting the ususal "where are you located" calls and Josh was responding "Its the yellow store, you can't miss it." Indeed you cannot.

New Toy Cameras

We have added three new superstars to our toy camera line up.

First up is the Blackbird Fly. It comes in an array of awesome colors and is probably the most visually striking modern camera I have seen in a long time. Everything down to the packaging is well executed, which is a nod to how this camera performs. If you can't tell by looking at it, it's a twin lens camera. Basically that means you look down into it and shoot from the waist (there is an option to shoot "normally" too) which I think is like the photography equivalent of taking the bus or riding a bike if you are used to driving a car. You end up seeing things in a totally different way and ending up with a new vantage point. Most remarkable, it is a 35 MM (most twin lens cameras are 120) so you can get your rolls developed almost anywhere.

Next is the Baby Holga. Yes, it is a 110 Holga that you can put on your keychain! Totally portable Holga quality photos. It's also only 20 dollars. I can't wait to see what I get out of this one.

Finally is the Wide Slim camera. Also available in a bunch of cool colors. This is a super wide angle 35MM that gives you awesome vignetted shots with unbelievable color saturation.

PASTE

Jason Laurits puts in a lot of hours, and logs a lot of miles, as the designer, shipping manager, social media manager, sales rep and every other position of the line PASTE. You may have met him a little over a year ago when he came to Columbus for a trunk show at the shop. We recently sat down with Jason to talk to him about how excited we are about the new pieces we just got in for fall and how super excited we are for his swimwear we'll be getting after a short and mild winter.

1.From what I can tell Paste is a one man operation. You design, sell, rep and stay on the road a lot. What do you like about running things alone. Is there anyone else in the company or do you wish there was?
Yes, as of now it's just me. I do hire out a bookkeeper, but that's about it. I am certainly ready to start handing some duties over to someoe else, and I think (HOPE) that's going to happen within this year. I would like to return somewhat to my life outside of this. But it's been nice to have a hand in every aspect of my business. It's sort of like boot camp right now, just paying my dues, that's what keeps me going. I just hope I haven't gotten addicted to the hard-working pace that I run at right now, where I won't be able to stop, slow down, and relax a little bit if given the chance. My grandma's 93 years old, and there isn't a day she doesn't have vaccum tracks in her rug. God, I hope I don't end up like that.
2. What was your favorite city on your summer tour and why haven't you been back to Columbus yet?
Sorry Columbus, Tigertree has yet to invite me back. I've been sitting by the phone for while now waiting for your call. My fave city this summer was once again Chicago. They are just great supporters of Paste and indie brands in general. They get it, love it, and I love the city. It's beautiful, clean, and people are really nice.
3. You seemed pretty proud of that free buffet you won at the Wynn, did it meet your expectations?
I actually haven't cashed it in yet. I kept putting it off each night, until it was the last night and I was catching a red-eye home. I went, stood in the long line, didn't move for 20 minutes. There's really nothing more embarrassing than standing by yourself in a buffet line with a "Free Buffet" coupon in your hand, especially at the Wynn. I didn't want to miss my flight, so I had to bow out. Fortunately, I have six months to use it, and I am there twice a year so I will keep you updated.
4. You used to have two brands Plaster and Paste but are now doing the tees and menswear under the same name, why the change? Plaster was a contemporary line with a higher pricepoint, while Paste was its more affordable option consisting at the time of just graphic tees. It was tough enough to juggle them both, then the recession hit and stores weren't taking on new lines at Plaster's pricepoint. They were, however, interested in Paste. So I decided to focus on the tees with the hopes of expanding it into a contemporary line. Slowly but surely, button-downs are out this fall, and swimwear is coming out next summer.
5. I am really excited about your swim-wear we'll be getting in for spring. I guess that isn't really a question but if you want to respond to that you can.
No it wasn't a question, but I'll respond and save you from embarrassment. I'm excited about the swim, too. It was one of those things that just made sense for me to do. I love doing graphics, and thought it would be great to work with swim. And it came out exactly how I pictured it in my head! I mean, how often does that happen for us perfectionists!

Jansport Heritage

Jansport started in the late 60's during a time when many companies with hippies at the helm were changing the way companies were run and what they sold. I struggle to use the word hippies because it conjures up images of some baggy pant, birkenstock, route 420 tee shirt, hemp necklace, Dave Matthews Band following 17 year old. They had engineering degrees, well at least one of them did. Like many companies of the day, they turned product design and business on its head and were creating revolutionary products.

Mods Vs. Rockers

We are throwing a Mods Vs. Rockers event with our friends at Milk Bar this Sunday night. We'll have free stuff from Ben Sherman and discounts on Fred Perry and Ben Sherman merchandise. Milk Bar has some deeply discounted Brixton hats and scored us some free PBR. The Mod side is clearly winning already since we have FREE Ben Sherman stuff and they have DISCOUNTED Brixton stuff. Line-up is at 5 PM (Scooters at Tigertree, Motorcycles at Milk Bar, Mopeds I guess can choose), we'll hang out for a few minutes and look at each other bikes, fix whatever broke on the way here and buy some gear if you are in need. Then we'll take a quick ride through downtown, ending up at Late Night Slice where we'll keep looking at bikes, fix some stuff that broke on the ride through downtown and watch Quadrophenia on the wall.
You should all help me convince Niki to ride my moped, unless my scooter breaks down again between now and then, in which case I'll need it.

Josh stole the amazing graphic for this tee from a vintage Ohio pin that we found at a flea market a few months ago. Its available on the super comfy American Apparel track tees for both men and women. We also printed some tees with the full color Tigertree logo. I would say something like "come get them while the last!" but the truth is, I think we are going to be stocking both for a while. So instead I will say- come get them because they are awesome!

As the keeper of the women's half of the shop, I feel like the mother of the brands and I could never call out a favorite. (My mom used to say this about her 5 children. When I got older she revieled that she "loves" us all equally, but "likes" some of us more than others) But I will say that every time we get an order in from She-Bible, I take one of everything home for myself. Aside from the fact that they produce everything domestically and almost exclusively use organic fabrics, it just feels great to wear. Everything is so comfortable without looking like it. I am spending most of today branding. No seriously branding. Yes, I know I have a brand but like branding branding, like actually branding. No, ugh, just look:

Yes, we got a tiny branding iron and our now putting our mark on everything (including my wrist accidentally) in the store. Like all of our projects this one has several steps beyond the expected so the next few days will be heating, stamping, hanging, soaping, scrubbing, drying, repeating and putting out small fires (just kidding landlord) and applying burn cream (not just kidding self) but it should be worth it. I know we just did a post about him, but we were lucky enough to have this guy design our incredible logo for us and it belongs on more stuff. Now if we could just find a really loyal customer...

Also, and stop reading now if you are not a geek, we are producing analog Foursquare Badges! We'll have the whole series, including a special Tigertree badge that you can only pick up by physically checking into the store but the rest of them you can buy on our website.

I have always had a fascination with watches. I am sure I have said this several times on here, to you in person, on twitter... but my grandfather was a watch repairman and it instilled the love. He rarely worked on anything exotic, mostly old timex or casios. So my collection of watches from him ranges from a few rare time pieces to over a hundred fun, inexpensive watches.
So my love affair with cheap, fun watches clearly would lead me to those only available on the streets of Tokyo. Unfortunatly I am a little tied down right now, so being unable to pick up and go there I spent weeks finding a distributor, getting orders lost in translation, waiting for customs and finally I am able to provide fun, colorful, insanely inexpensive, digital watches. All of these are priced at $22 and now that our website is finally functional, you can buy one online!

It's spring, the sun is shining, and we could not have a more appropriate line for the conditions than Dear Creatures. Now, in addition to the incredible dresses and rompers you have grown to love, they have produced their first season of menswear!

If you have been a Tigertree customer for a while, you would have remembered how sad we were when Brown Sound went away. When Dear Creatures designer, Bianca, wanted to add a men's collection, she didn't have to look very far; her boyfriend, Rob, was the designer for Brown Sound. We like to think of Dear Creatures menswear like Brown Sound's more refined older brother. It takes cues from decades past and applies them to contempoary mensware. You will see a style reminiscent of Brown Sound but with better fabrics and a closer attention to detail.

If you have been in the shop in the last couple of weeks you might have noticed that we are stocking more vintage wares. Classic tie bars, collar stays and cuff links; old costume jewelry, quirky pins from Russia, beautiful glass avon perfume decanters that have been cleaned out and reporpsed as stash boxes..
We have been doing a lot of treasue hunting this winter and we are thrilled to bring our finds to the store.

In the world of the new, we just our spring shipment in from one of my favorite lines, Eryn Brinie from Korea.

We also have new sweaters in from my latest clothing crush- Lia Molly. The colors are so rich and amazing, I've never seen a line like it. It might have something to do with the fact that they hail from New Orleans. No clothes come from the Big Easy, but maybe more should. Think french whimsy meets southern bell.

If you, say, watch movies, tv or use the internet, you have probably seen some work by our friend, Jon Klassen. I opened up Design Sponge today to frind a whole entry on him and decided I needed to drop his name on our blog.
Four years ago, when we were finalizing plans for Tigertree, Jon was our go-to graphic designer. He created our logo, did mock ups of the interior and exterior of the store, and plenty of other jobs that were way beneath him.
We obviously love our logo and stick it on everything we have the chance to. And not just for shameless self promotion, but because its good.

A few years later Jon also designed our wedding invitations.

Josh had the image screened onto canvas for framing, which now hangs in our living room.

We are so thrilled to see Jon getting the attention that he deserves and just want to say thanks for the thousands of dollars worth of amazing work he did for us for nothing. Everyone should do themselves a favor by visiting his website, burst of beaden.

Valentines Day Idea #2

A Flock of Swallows ($22 each)

We have this cluster of hand carved swallow photo clips hanging in our living room and I was thinking this morning that they would be an adorable gift. If you have been with your significant other for while, dig up some old photos of the two of you that they would have forgotten about (I found that middle polaroid in the basement a few days ago. I put it on the clip and Josh, who never notices anything, actually saw it and was so excited to see something from our pre-Columbus days). If you are just starting out as a couple, hang a list from one of the birds of things you would like to do together this year or reasons that they are so important to you.

Valentines Day Idea #1

I have been so impressed with the number of guys that I saw in the store this week shopping for Valentines Day gifts. In case you are not quite as on top of it as these fellows, I have some gift ideas that I wanted to share with you this week.
The first: gold or silver dipped leaf pendants ($30).

I love these because we have a ton to choose from so hopefully you can personalize it a little. For instance, one of my favorite things about our house is the red japanese maple that is in the front yard. A japanese maple leaf necklace would be the perfect gift for me. Your lady doesn't have a favorite tree? Well, maybe she likes to cook- we have bay and kale leaves also. Maybe you hike in the woods together- an evergreen sprig would be a great choice.
Extra points if you include a note with something about how the leaves on the tree in the front yard die every fall, but this leaf will last forever like your love.. etc. Maybe to take the gag factor down a notch you write the note in this great Oddball Press card

Five vertebrae from a small snake have been cast in brass and strung on a 19" antique brass chain. The bones fit together so satisfyingly, and move together in such a weirdly snake-like way, you won't be able to stop playing with them. $90 in brass, also available in bone, $45

This unbelievably tiny (1 1/8" long!) ruby-throated hummingbird skull was originally found in a science teacher's supply catalog. This specimen was cast in sterling silver and put on a delicate sterling silver chain. $90 silver, $75 bronze

This spring-loaded steel penknife has brass rivets and measures just over 1" long when it's closed. There's a notch where you can use your fingernail to open the very sharp blade. Don't try to wear this when you go through airport security. $45

A mottled brown, black, and white 2"-long feather dangles from a brass mount next to a delicately pressed mesh ginkgo leaf charm. $35

This tiny (1-3/8" long) Hohner harmonica has 4 single holes, 8 reeds, and plays a full octave in the key of C. Brass and nickel plated, and hangs from a 28" oxidized brass chain with a spring ring clasp. $35

A teeny-tiny 1 1/4" glass vial houses a miniature piece of polished amber with a trapped insect. $40

Year of the Tiger

Things have been very busy around here lately. The UPS man has been in every day bringing us new treasures. Local artist have been dropping by bringing their signature wares. Some new items include locally made bow ties and pocket squares, canvas and leather mason bags for use as stylish carry ons and weekender bags, some reading materials from our favorite author, industrial thermoses to keep your coffee/tea/whatever warm for a work day even as long as ours (12 hours), hand-fired enamel earrings in every color of the rainbow, Ben Sherman outerwear, Lomography cameras, and vintage Ohio military inspired necklaces. We feel like the store has really started to take hape over the past few months. Did you know that 2010 is the year of the Tiger? We feel like its obvious.

We are starting to get in our new stock for 2010. I'm sure everyone says this, but we are seriously getting some amazing things in for the new year. Really.
Josh says that I'm supposed to keep the new stuff a secret for our grand redesign in about a week, but here are a few tasty morsels.
I'm in love with these vintage mini abacus necklaces that we got in today. They are adorable and I am pretty bad with numbers, so I snatched up a pale yellow one as I was unpacking them! They also come in pastel green and blue, black, red and dark blue.

Such is the case with these cowl scarves that I have been pestering a customer about making for about a year now. They look amazing with everything and feel just as good as they are made with the most incredibly soft fluffy yarn. I think that these are going to go so fast and I have a feeling that there will be limited quantities throughout the season, so I would recommend snatching them up fast. The Magic Gardens arrived while we were out celebrating my birthday in the woods. I saw these in the Curiosity Shoppe in SF a few weeks ago and the owners were kind enough to point me to their distributer. Now all of the 80s fun is here in Columbus for you to take home for $6.
